The Microraptor

Microraptor dinosaur

The Microraptor which means "small thief" was a small dromaeosaurid genus that lived during the early cretaceous period and mostly inhabited China . The fossils that have been found have been dated between 125 to 130 million years old. The Microraptor was a flying dinosaur which would make it one of the smaller dinosaurs to have existed measuring about 1.8 - 2.5 feet long from beak to tail tip. It was also one the few flying dinosaurs to have been completely covered with feathers, which means it had feathers on its feet and forearms/hands. It also had a diamond shaped fan on its tail for added stability during flight. Some fossil specimens even had a crest on its head similar to a modern day wood pecker. They may have also come in different colors depending on the sub-species which helped for blending in and not being spotted by predators. The Microraptor had long serrated teeth and long forearms which would have made it rather deadly if it were to swoop down onto a smaller animal. One thing that was kind of strange about this dinosaur is that it had four wings, it had the normal wings and its hind legs were also stabilizer wings kind of like an old double winged airplane. This dinosaur most likely lived in trees because it would not have been able to walk to good with wings for legs. In popular culture this flying dinosaur has been mentioned a few times, it was shown in the 2006 documentary "Prehistoric Park" and also in that animated movie "The Land Before Time: The Great Day of the Flyers".
